Powerful enough.
October 11, 2014
Kills rabbits and squirrels. Bought this to eliminate pests. Out of the box, mounted and zeroed the scope. Fired 10.5 gr pellets to keep the speed under supersonic. In 1 hour I killed 4 fox squirrels and 1 rabbit. The rabbit was 20 feet, 1 shot kill. One squirrel was 90 feet, 1 shot kill. 1 other squirrel was a 30 foot 1 shot kill. Two squirrels at about 40-50 feet took multiple hits to kill. It seems to have a break in period and gets more accurate as you shoot around 50 shots. Very happy with the power and accuracy.
Pros:
Kills rabbits and squirrels no problem.
Cons:
Heavy and large.

good & bad
October 5, 2014
I've had mine over a year now. Out of the box accuracy and the trigger pull were worse than terrible. I thought it could be a scope issue so I thought I'd go with the iron sights. Wrong! The rear sight was missing pieces making it non-usable. Contacted Crosman and they said "you probably broke rear sight yourself" so I was on my own . They eventually sent replacement parts after I had to bad mouth them on their own forum. It's very reliable though, shoots every time. The velocity is pretty slow however ( I have the detuned Canadian version) It wont penetrate a soup can at 10 yards. I'm thinking of upgrading the spring/piston to the non detuned version as I'm thinking the slower velocity may be partly to blame for the terrible accuracy ( at 10 yards you can't get a 5 shot group that you can cover with BOTH hands) No way I would wish this on my worst enemy. Stay far away (at least from the slow, inaccurate Canadian version) Truly hope this helps someone
Pros:
Love the appearance and real wood stock
Cons:
Not accurate, stock scope is terrible, sold with missing sight parts and trigger could not be made worse on purpose. note: didn't purchase from airgundepot! wish I had, I hear their customer service is 1st rate and I needed customer service!

Scoped Crosman Optimus .177 - Great Accuracy & Performance
September 14, 2014
I have had my Crosman Optimus for two years now and have fired in excess of 2500 rounds. I did have a mishap and broke the spring, but we won't go into that now. I replaced the spring which was about 25% stronger and proceeded to work on other areas of the rifle, namely;- 1. The Trigger - I stripped, removed and inserted a miniature roller bearing in the mechanism so that there was no sliding of metal on metal when engaging the trigger. I then de-burred and polished up both sheer points on the trigger sheer. Upon assembly, I used clear silicon grease. 2. The Spring and Piston Assembly - Once I got to the exact "cut to length" position for the spring, I fashioned a "seat" for the spring out of very tough teflon to protect the rear seat of the spring. I then washed the spring assembly with a mild thinners and polished up the inner piston tube to a shine. When all was done, I applied the clear silicon grease sparingly to the piston tube as well as the piston and seal. For the actual spring itself, I applied thick waterproof grease to help reduce the noise emanating from the spring. Then I assembled everything and SUCCESS! Have never looked back since! PLEASE NOTE, you will have to fashion a spring press of sorts to compress the assembly.
Pros:
Very accurate and very hard hitting, BUT you must find a pellet that works for your rifle. Beware though, your lighter pellets WILL tumble, so I use the H&N Crow Magnum's at 9.26 grains with which I can achieve a grouping of 10 mm with five rounds at a distance of 20 meters. In fact, the bull in my targets are only 10 mm in diameter which I hit with regularity.
Cons:
Be sure to keep the stock screws tight because they are prone to work loose, or apply "stuff" so that they stay fastened.

Excellent well-made pellet rifle
April 20, 2014
I bought the Crosman Optimus .177 caliber pellet rifle about a year ago. My decision was based on a the fact that it was a very powerful and well made rifle with a weight around 6.5 pounds. The stock is standard finished hard wood. It has a rifled steel barrel with adjustable sights. It has the ability to push a lead pellet 1,000 fps +. After cleaning the barrel I shot several hundred rounds to break the rifle in. Most spring type air rifles have long, rough and crude factory triggers. After watching a short video clip on trigger replacement, I removed my trigger and easily replaced it with the GRT trigger. The GRT trigger made a huge difference in precision shooting ability and enhanced the accuracy as well. I mounted a BSA 4X air rifle scope on it. The rifle has exceptional power for the price and it shoots cleanly through wood trim boards in my garage. I have read some of the comments about noise levels but I don't think it is loud. I have owned numerous BB and pellet rifles over a 40 year period. The Crosman Optimus is at the top of the list for value for price and general quality. I have attached a small orange colored stick-on target that I used to sight in the rifle. This shows the accuracy of the pellet rifle.
Pros:
Nice wood stock with solid steel construction. For the price, the rifle offers quality, practical accuracy, and power. It becomes very capable with the GRT trigger and a nice quality air rifle scope. For the size it has a nice 6.5 pound weight. That adds to its practical use in the field as a general air rifle or a small game air rifle.

GREAT GUN!
April 1, 2014
I've had mine for over 2 years now and am as happy today as the day I bought it. The gun is well made and powerful, but maybe a little loud. The scope works well out of the box to about 40 yards and it took no time to adjust it to 75 yards. I live in the woods so I use it for target shooting as well as pesky varmints my dogs can't reach. Last week I got a Wood Pecker, at 7:00 AM, on my roof, from 50 yards. My Sons have had equal success with Raccoon's, Rabbits and Wood Peckers. Target shooting is a blast with this gun and was a great diversion for my wife while she was wheel chair bound with a broken leg two summers ago.
Pros:
Well made, good balance, nice wood stock. Accurate when you buy high quality pellets for it.
Cons:
A little loud & a bit jumpy. Expected tho for 1200 fps.

Nicely made but not accurate
October 7, 2012
The rifle appears to be well made. The scope is pretty darn good considering it is part a $100 package deal. The iron sights are plastic but they seem to work well. Striking power is also very good. HOWEVER, accuracy is terrible using Crosman SSP pellets (6 groups at 40'). Maybe there is a break in period? I will try some higher quality pellets to see if that helps.
Pros:
Seemingly well made. Scope is pretty nice considering overall package cost. Striking power is very good.
Cons:
Accuracy with Crosman SSP pellets is terrible. Rifle is somewhat noisy; not a good choice for stealthy home use.

Great gun
September 27, 2012
I got this gun and I have probably shot 300 plus rounds with it. It's accurate and powerful. The scope that comes with it is really good. I hit a target with a grouping of three quarters of an inch at 60 yards. First squirrel I got was a head shot from 20 yards. My scope and iron sights were zeroed in from the box, which was really nice. The gun is sturdy and the scope stays zeroed in very well. This gun is great for beginners and skilled shooters. The trigger is an easy pull and the cocking force is fine. This is an excellent gun!!!!!
Pros:
Accurate Powerful Sturdy construction Great price
Cons:
None

Amazing
September 6, 2012
This gun is amazing. I have a 495 fps Optimus and mounted a Tasco 3-7 x 20 scope and killed a bunny today with two shots.
Pros:
Everything
Cons:
Probably nothing, I have had it since Christmas and it still shoots like new.

Good/Not so good
July 10, 2012
Good gun, shoots great. The scope is not so good; in fact it broke right off the bat. I sent scope to Crosman and am interested to see if they will replace it without any problems. Getting rid of rabbits real quickly, even without a scope.

Awesome
April 27, 2012
I bought this rifle after viewing many others, i do have 3 other rifles ranging from gamo to remington nitro piston. this gun is by far from what i have had experience with is so far the best and most accurate. it never misses, i have fired approx 1000 pellets through it using the provided scope and 'bang' every animal dead. scope still zero and no movements. it is medium loud but that is ok in the forests and woods as noone else is there, just me, my camo and this rifle. get one, get one now and do not miss out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pros:
Accurate Powerful Scope is good for price Strong
Cons:

High Quality for a Low Price
January 5, 2012
This gun was stunning out of the box. I have never owned a high end break barrel(not yet at least) but I can't imagine them looking that much better than this. There is some uneven coloring of the wood on the inside of the wood near the break area but you would have to go over it with a fine tooth comb to see it. All screws were tight and the gun was well packed. The scope included(I bought the combo) was nice for a factory included scope. The noise was a little much for my apartment but this is my first magnum springer so it is hard to compare. It is about the same as my Stoeger X20 that I also received for Christmas. Very happy with the gun. My wife had issues with cocking it but once broken in I hope it will ease up a bit. Dieseling present even after 30 or so shots, clean the darn barrel before shipping and that goes for all manufacturers. Put a ring around the front fiber optic to protect it. Pellets, including crosman's own, need to be tapped into the breach otherwise the skirt gets cut off when closing. Some checkering would be nice but for the price the wood is beautiful without it. It would be nice if manufacturers who also make pellets(I don't expect them to recommend other brands) would test fire their pellets and give some basic recommendations on which one gave the best groups. This would save us a lot of time and money testing all kinds of pellets. Right out the box first shot was a dead center bullseye, one of the best I have ever shot, distance was 30ft and the pellet was one of the 10+grain Gamo round tipped. If you are looking for an entry level .177 break barrel look no further. My brother in law has a crosman phantom and his gun looks like a toy compared to the Optimus. The weight of this gun makes it feel like a firearm and commands respect. Buy it you will love it.

Q&A
By Arnii from IR on May 30, 2012
how far can i shoot with it? and for what distance it;s best? and is it actually shooting with 1200 fps? and if yes with 20 or 12g?
By Staff on May 31, 2012

Answer:
This gun actually fires .177 caliber Lead Pellets. It will shoot at 1200. It's accurate distance is around 25 yards if sighted in properly. Max range can easily be 100 yards but not accurately.

How good is this rifle?

By Conor from Sunnyside, Washington on August 16, 2012

Answer:
It is great for pest control, target shooting, plinking, etc. Plenty of power and fun gun!

By Andrew from westbrookville New York on December 10, 2011
I might purchase this gun just so that i have another .177 caliber air rifle [have many .22s] I would just like to know if this gun can take down squirrels, rabbits, Birds, Raccoon, Possum, and possibly larger game. I currently have about 15 pellet rifles all over .177 caliber except one .177 so i basicly use large pellet guns and was wondering if this gun is worth the money and will it kill any of the above animals
By Greg from Alton il. on December 29, 2011

Answer:
I havn't hunted with it but idid shoot it into a 3 inch phone book and it went about 1 and a quater into it and set up 3 cans and a plastic bottle and went through all of themif that helps any.
By Eid from Burbank, IL on December 30, 2011

Answer:
Hey Andrew, this is Eid. You have a great question because I love answering yes to it. I have bought this rifle from airgun depot and it is very powerful and dead on accurate. I have been adjusting the scope on a 2x4 piece of wood and the pellet maks it's way about half way in. I have not tested the rifle on small game such as squirrels yet but from what i have seen on videos, the crosman quest can do the job and that rifle is a bit weaker than the optimus. I recommend the Optimus to you because it's great. It is also a new 2011 rifle.
By John from Fullerton, CA on December 30, 2011

Answer:
Yes, this Optimus .177 rifle can take down small game such as squirrels, rabbits, birds, raccoon, and possum. However, hunting small game is mainly dependent on shot placement. Head shots are best next to heart/lung shots. Since the .177 will shoot ~200fps faster than an equivalent .22, which means a flatter shot, it might do better on the possum as it can get better penetration on vital shots.
The trigger on the Optimus .177 is very heavy, but you can get used to it to get accurate shots. If you are a Euro airgun fan with feather lite triggers, this air rifle will not fit your liking. For the money, the Optimus .177 w/ scope is one of the best value airgun in the market.
By Conor from Sunnyside, WA on February 8, 2012

Answer:
Yes, the .177 is really accurate with Polymags, Barracuda's, and is nice for shooting birds at 50yds.
