Nicely made but not accurate
October 7, 2012
![]()
The rifle appears to be well made. The scope is pretty darn good considering it is part a $100 package deal. The iron sights are plastic but they seem to work well. Striking power is also very good. HOWEVER, accuracy is terrible using Crosman SSP pellets (6 groups at 40'). Maybe there is a break in period? I will try some higher quality pellets to see if that helps.
Pros:Seemingly well made. Scope is pretty nice considering overall package cost. Striking power is very good.Cons:Accuracy with Crosman SSP pellets is terrible. Rifle is somewhat noisy; not a good choice for stealthy home use. |

Great gun

I got this gun and I have probably shot 300 plus rounds with it. It's accurate and powerful. The scope that comes with it is really good. I hit a target with a grouping of three quarters of an inch at 60 yards. First squirrel I got was a head shot from 20 yards. My scope and iron sights were zeroed in from the box, which was really nice. The gun is sturdy and the scope stays zeroed in very well. This gun is great for beginners and skilled shooters. The trigger is an easy pull and the cocking force is fine. This is an excellent gun!!!!!
Pros:Accurate Powerful Sturdy construction Great priceCons:None |

This gun is amazing. I have a 495 fps Optimus and mounted a Tasco 3-7 x 20 scope and killed a bunny today with two shots.
Pros:EverythingCons:Probably nothing, I have had it since Christmas and it still shoots like new. |

Good/Not so good

Good gun, shoots great. The scope is not so good; in fact it broke right off the bat. I sent scope to Crosman and am interested to see if they will replace it without any problems.
Getting rid of rabbits real quickly, even without a scope.

I bought this rifle after viewing many others, i do have 3 other rifles ranging from gamo to remington nitro piston. this gun is by far from what i have had experience with is so far the best and most accurate. it never misses, i have fired approx 1000 pellets through it using the provided scope and 'bang' every animal dead. scope still zero and no movements. it is medium loud but that is ok in the forests and woods as noone else is there, just me, my camo and this rifle.
get one, get one now and do not miss out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pros:Accurate Powerful Scope is good for price StrongCons:ermmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm |

High Quality for a Low Price

This gun was stunning out of the box. I have never owned a high end break barrel(not yet at least) but I can't imagine them looking that much better than this. There is some uneven coloring of the wood on the inside of the wood near the break area but you would have to go over it with a fine tooth comb to see it. All screws were tight and the gun was well packed. The scope included(I bought the combo) was nice for a factory included scope. The noise was a little much for my apartment but this is my first magnum springer so it is hard to compare. It is about the same as my Stoeger X20 that I also received for Christmas. Very happy with the gun.
My wife had issues with cocking it but once broken in I hope it will ease up a bit. Dieseling present even after 30 or so shots, clean the darn barrel before shipping and that goes for all manufacturers. Put a ring around the front fiber optic to protect it. Pellets, including crosman's own, need to be tapped into the breach otherwise the skirt gets cut off when closing. Some checkering would be nice but for the price the wood is beautiful without it. It would be nice if manufacturers who also make pellets(I don't expect them to recommend other brands) would test fire their pellets and give some basic recommendations on which one gave the best groups. This would save us a lot of time and money testing all kinds of pellets.
Right out the box first shot was a dead center bullseye, one of the best I have ever shot, distance was 30ft and the pellet was one of the 10+grain Gamo round tipped. If you are looking for an entry level .177 break barrel look no further. My brother in law has a crosman phantom and his gun looks like a toy compared to the Optimus. The weight of this gun makes it feel like a firearm and commands respect. Buy it you will love it.

Answer:
This gun actually fires .177 caliber Lead Pellets. It will shoot at 1200. It's accurate distance is around 25 yards if sighted in properly. Max range can easily be 100 yards but not accurately.By marcos from new york on June 23, 2012

Answer:
Hey Andrew, this is Eid. You have a great question because I love answering yes to it. I have bought this rifle from airgun depot and it is very powerful and dead on accurate. I have been adjusting the scope on a 2x4 piece of wood and the pellet maks it's way about half way in. I have not tested the rifle on small game such as squirrels yet but from what i have seen on videos, the crosman quest can do the job and that rifle is a bit weaker than the optimus. I recommend the Optimus to you because it's great. It is also a new 2011 rifle.By John from Fullerton, CA on December 30, 2011
Answer:
Yes, this Optimus .177 rifle can take down small game such as squirrels, rabbits, birds, raccoon, and possum. However, hunting small game is mainly dependent on shot placement. Head shots are best next to heart/lung shots. Since the .177 will shoot ~200fps faster than an equivalent .22, which means a flatter shot, it might do better on the possum as it can get better penetration on vital shots. The trigger on the Optimus .177 is very heavy, but you can get used to it to get accurate shots. If you are a Euro airgun fan with feather lite triggers, this air rifle will not fit your liking. For the money, the Optimus .177 w/ scope is one of the best value airgun in the market.

Answer:
Yes, the .177 is really accurate with Polymags, Barracuda's, and is nice for shooting birds at 50yds.
