Ordered in Dec 2013, shipped and delivered quickly. Looked pretty much new when I opened it, the scope and rings appeared to be unused. I cleaned it and polished the bore with J-B per the advise I've read, and have shot about 50 or so pellets through it so far. The scope has zeroed fairly well and most shots at 20 yd group well but seems to have an occasional flyers. Using Crosman Premier, the ones in the tins, and it seem the biggest variable in accuracy is how well the pellet seats - some are tight and some are loose. The CPs are 14.3 gr, measured velocity is right around 700 fps, but I didn't weigh the pellets to verify or compare velocity/gr. I'll do a little target shooting with this and keep it with my prepper gear, it's quiet and should be a cheap method of keeping squirrels and cats on the table if need be.

Pros
Easy to cock, seems pretty durable. quiet shooting. Scope seems pretty decent. The grip is comfortable.

Cons
heavy, not a true bull barrel - just shrouded. The trigger is quite long, it would be really nice if there was a detente right before the trigger released so that the finger could be educated a little quicker.

Received my refurb Trail NP All Weather on 12/20/2013. The rifle and scope both looked like new, with the exception of the refurb stickers on the box and rifle stock. The scope was easy to mount and the gun is quite accurate with Crosman Premier hollow point pellets. Overall a great value!

Received my NP today and was able to put around 100 rounds down range and WOW!! I have 3 other air rifles and the accuracy and consistency is unmatched compared to my others. This is my first refurbished rifle and straight out of the box you couldn't tell a difference from a new one. I have to say its a little heavy but you get use to it pretty quick. I found the trigger smooth and the scope is great for the money. Can't go wrong with this rifle!!

Pros
Accurate, Consistant

Cons
on the heavy side

I have been shooting air rifles/pistols for over 40 years both for sport and in competition. First lets start with the "refurbished." I have purchased several "refurbs" from Airgun Depot and they have always been great and in like new. This rifle is a great rifle to sit and shoot all day long. My Girlfriend and I do that quite often. Nice power with Crosman Premier's 14.3 gr. Accurate, nice scope. Airgun Depot has always shipped in a timely manner and packed them well. Trigger is as others have mentioned not so good, not terrible but very long pull and has creep, after about 400-500 rounds it smoothed out and did not have the creep but still had a very long pull, quite usable. I have replaced them with the third party GRT-3 trigger as other also mentioned, but not really necessary. If your looking for a target rifle with a target trigger look elsewhere BUT for the dollar these are a "GREAT DEAL" and lots of fun shooting. Side note here for fun: Both my Girlfriend and I can shoot this gun and "HIT" a 5 gallon pail at 100 yards 8-9 out of 10 times consistently with the mil-dot scope provided, using correct holdover not that you'd want to shoot game that far, I'm sure the FPE would be very low at that distance. We use the "FREE" Hawke Chair Gun Pro software for calculations.

Pros
Great Price accurate good scope quality good for Chinese manufacturer cocks easy lots of fun to shoot

Cons
long trigger pull trigger has creep (but after 400-500 rounds creep is gone)

I thought buying refurbished should be as good as new since whatever, if anything, was wrong would have been fixed, the rifle having even received a bit extra attention than a new one.... I was not disappointed. The rifle performs as well as expected. Looks great. And, according to what I have read performs better than average because all of the reviews grieve about the Benjamin Trail's trigger. I have experienced no such problems and, in fact, find the trigger to be both smooth and consistent. The rifle is hard hitting, accurate, and beautiful. NO COMPLAINTS!

Pros
The trigger is actually smooth and consistent The rifle is accurate A hard hitting .22

Cons
It should be available in stainless steel since it is an all weather rifle. (I think it would be worth the extra expense for such a fine rifle.)

Let me start by saying that I've been shooting air rifles on and off for 35 years. I was looking to purchase an inexpensive but accurate rifle that would keep my center fire skills sharp while being able to handle pest birds/varmints discreetly in an urban setting. Let me distill my extensive research into some key points: My refurbished NP trail all weather in .22 cal shot one inch groups (with the occasional flyer) out of the box with Beeman FTS 5.5mm 14.72 grain copper plated pellets on my 25 yard range with the supplied 3-9x40 centerpoint scope. The scope has parallax and fine focus adjustment. It is a heavy rifle with excellent ergonomics. The much maligned trigger was not an issue on my rifle. While annoyingly long at first, tightening the adjustment screw took care of most of its sloppiness. If you wanted to, you could easily modify it with a bicycle chain bushing to make it very respectable. At this point I don't see the need. The gun is quieter than the impact of the pellet on my trap and was powerful enough to shred the back of it! I'll be stuffing my new one with a phone book. It should have ample stopping power for crows, squirrels, raccoons, etc. just be careful of your backstop. This rifle was designed to be used by a responsible adult (it weighs about 9 pounds with the scope on!). If you buy refurbished (highly recommended) you get a great price and a gun that's been examined and fixed at a factory in the U.S., which makes me feel slightly better about buying a Chinese product. Just make sure you put enough pellets down range to test it's reliability before the 30 day warranty expires. But once you get this beast in your hands, if your anything like me, that will be an absolute pleasure. Happy shooting!

Pros
Price, stopping power, accuracy, scope, weaver rail, ergonomics, sling mounts, barrel shroud, cool looking, quiet

Cons
If you are not an adult male: weight, cocking effort. This product is manufactured in China.

Received this rifle very quickly form AirGun Depot. Was very impressed with the quality right out of the box. The rifle is a little bigger than I anticipated it being but it is all good! It is a hefty beast I will say. Feels like my heavy barreled .22-250! Haven't gotten to do a good sighting in but will in the next few days or so. Will take into consideration other reviews I've read on this model when doing the initial shooting and set up. I am excited to see what it'll do. I did fire some test shots and holy smokes this thing is FAST! You definitely can hear the pellet "crack" as it approaches the sound barrier. Am really impressed with it. Just what I was looking for. If it turns out to be a tack driver, I'll be tickled pink!

Pros
Everything!

Cons
HEAVY. But I'm good with it. I'm a big guy, 6'5" and 350#'s so it's not too much. For a smaller person, may be a little cumbersome.

I bought this rifle hoping I'd get one of the good ones. I did. I knew the trigger would be terrible and the rifle would be heavy. Both of those are true. It took about 100 shots to get consistent point of impact but after the break in I'm able to shoot 1" groups at 20 yards with a simple rest. The scope isn't as bad as I expected and the trigger, while long, is not as bad as I'd read. Once you figure out the trigger and have the patience to wait for it to break you can be accurate with it out of the box. The real negative is the weight. This thing is heavy and I wouldn't want to carry it around much.

Pros
Accurate Quiet

Cons
Weight Trigger

I would have given this a 5 except for the trigger. Installed a Charlie Tuna trigger and it is a 5. Great rifle at the price.

Were there any negative aspects of purchasing refurbished vs new?

asked LARRY HICKS

NONE! I always buy refebs when available. They're simply a return that someone didn't like, couldn't shoot, or maybe defective and the bad part replaced. I imagine a lot were leaking springs and broken scopes, so new parts installed and we get a great deal. The only negative is the shorter warranty, but you should be able to find any problems in 30 days anyway. Even if not the parts are still cheaper than the money you saved. All the guns I've rec'd were identical to new except a little "R" stamped on the barrel so they know it was a referb.

ROBERT from USA

The warranty is significantly less on the refurbished units. 30 Day Limited on a new unit the warranty is 1 Year Limited I have found that 'usually' refurbished units have been thoroughly checked out and have less problems than new ones. Therefore for me (and since the shiny 'new' label is not as big a deal for me as 'works' is) the savings are justified.

Mike from USA

I purchased this in December. It arrived quickly and other than the box having some shipping damage (every thing inside was OK) it was a good experience. My testing of the rifle and scope has shown it to be a good choice. It is a hard hitter and is as accurate as I can make it. I don't shoot 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards but then I don't shoot 1/2 inch groups with my 22cal rifle either. I am sure the rifle is more accurate than I am at it's designed ranges. Overall I am pleased with my purchase and would recommend it to others looking for a similar value with the limited funds I have to play with. Everything else being equal I would like to have something like a discovery but for now I am happy with my choice.

Mike from USA

The warranty on the refurbished is limited to 30 days. On the positive side, there is a high probability that the rifle has been checked out by a technician qualified to assess it's operating condition and adjusted where necessary instead of just coming off the assembly line and out the door.

Jimmy from USA

None. I bought it for my son.(15 @ the time) he loves it and it is very accurate. They claim its 900fps we couldn't get it much above 700-750fps. Other than that I will buy another one. Great varmit gun!

Patrick from USA

I purchased 2 at Christmas '13 for my two sons. For some reason the scopes were not the same on each riffle. Otherwise, I would not have known they were refurbished had there not been a sticker on the box stating such. Remain impressed with the rifles.

Tony

Whats going to be better the benjamin np .22 or the nps .22 best all around gun. Or whats the best .22 air rifle for under 200 for hunting. Gas piston

asked matt novak

I have owned this rifle ,for a little while now ,and I can tell you ,to go with the GAS Piston . When I started shooting this rifle ,it shot a group ,the size of a nickel at 25 yard's .but it has opened up to the size of group to , 1 and a half inch. But I have shot two or three hunderd pellets through it ,and I have not cleaned it at all.and a man that I know told me ( He knows a lot more about air rifles than I.He shoots $2000.00 PCP Gun's .) He told me to clean mine with goo-gone ,not anything oil based .Because it will cause it to diesel ,Then he went on to say that when I get it cleaned it will go back to shooting the Nickel sized group or better .I belive it to be so! They say that you should shot 500 pellets through any gun to break it in .I am not disapointed at all in this rifle .and I don't think you will be either. When you get your rifle ,try the Gamo rocket pellets ,they have a little steel ball in the front .and they hit hard when they get there .

Gearl Lowe

I bought this rifle for my 16 year old son to hunt with. We both really like the gas piston system; smooth cocking, less vibration and quiet. The all weather synthetic stock is perfect for hunting outdoors. The rifle really shoots well and has easily taken squirrel out to 35 yards. The scope that comes with it does a good job. I own several types of air guns, spring magnum and PCP, this rifle would be my top choice for field use after my PCP gun. As far as the difference between np or nps, I personally don't know what the difference is.

Steven from USA

I did a lot of homework and for the money the refurbished benjamin trail NP .22 is the best gun for the bucks. The NPS has a lower velocity. The NP also has the sling mounts. I've had several friends shoot my gun and they all can't believe how nice it is. I got one for my brother in law for christmas and he loves it. Put "benjamin trail np .22 accuracy review" into the search bar on youtube. That guy owns a lot of pellet guns and really likes the np. It's also nice that the gun likes cheap ammo. But there are a lot of other videos on there about it also. **The trigger is crap** But there are free ways to fix it on you tube also. Or you can buy a trigger.

benjamin from USA

The NPS is rated at 50fps faster. It is also about a pound lighter than the Trail NP. Everything else being equal I would say the NPS is a bit better over all but... Everything else is not equal. I paid $40 less for my trail and have so far been very happy with it. I don't find the extra weight to be an issue. A little more power is always nice but we are talking about a very small power difference there too. At $139 for the (referb) Trail and $179 for the NPS I went with the Trail and am quite happy with my choice. Either way I don't see how either choice would be the wrong one. For me it came down to the bang per buck factor and I am happy with my choice.

Mike from USA

Are the scope ring high quality if I wanted to switch? What trigger do I but from Charlie da Tuna?

asked Harry

I am not an expert on scope rings, but I am an engineer and would consider these very solid. They are very similar to the Leapers Deluxe rings with the top half of each ring retained by 4 allen head cap screws. I see no reason to upgrade the rings or the scope unless you had some special need. The Center Point Mil Dot with the 40mm adjustable objective is very bright and 3x9 covers everything I need for both target hunting. Regarding the trigger, there are two designs used in the Benjamin Trail and you will have to remove the stock to determine which one you have GRT-III or CBR. There is full documentation and pictures on his website. This is a great gun and a real pleasure to shoot. Very accurate and much quieter than my Sheridan multi-pump and twice the phonebook penetration power! For $140 dollars, I don't see anything to compare. My refurb looks and feels brand new.

Harry

I have no issues with the scope rings on my gun. There is no scope walk or any issues with the scope staying on the gun. I would look up crossman trigger fix on youtube and after you view a couple videos you can decide what the best fix for you would be. I haven't decided yet which way i'm going to fix mine but it will be very cheap or free.

benjamin from USA

The velocity listed in .22 is 950 fps . Is this with lead, or alloy?

asked Thomas from Mexico

I've yet to try alloy in .22, but I'd be seriously surprised if it hit 950. With standard lead of 14.3gr you can expect 650 to 725, maybe as high as 750 if you are very lucky.

ROBERT from USA

I guess it woud be alloy , it is a lighter pellet so it should travel faster

gerald from USA

lead. Very powerful gun!

Robert from USA

according to the factory specs on the rifle the volocity rating is with alloy, and lead, depending on the gram weight is around 900,which is more than sufficient to drop a raccoon size varmit, i have 2 confirmed kills in the time i have owend the rifle,1 at about 50 yards a body shot and 1 at about 20 yards ,a head shot, both using a domed head 15gr. pellet.

Garry from USA

what is the scopes power please?

asked drew

3-9x magnification

Ed from New Zealand

It's a variable scope in 3-9x 40mm. Therefore lowest setting is 3X and highest is 9X.

Lew from USA

I am seriously interested in purchasing this Ben Tr NP 22 all weather. I would need to know what exactally was replaced, what was refurbished, and why such repairs were necessary. This will help me determine the projected longevity of the rifle. Please email me any information you may have about this particular rifle, or any other like rifles available for purchase. Thank you. ~ Bill

asked Capt. Bill

Bill, Unfortunately, when it comes to refurbished rifles and airguns we are not really told what is wrong with them before they are fixed by the manufacturer. All we know is that the items where returned for some reason to the manufacturer. They inspect all returns, fix any problems that the air rifle might have had and then they send them to us as a refurbished item to sell at a discounted rate. The defects could be anything from a scratch on the muzzle or stock, to the spring/piston replacement to just the customer not liking the item. We can not really give you a list of what issues might have been wrong with the gun. Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused. Hopefully this helps in your ordering. Sincerely, Airgun Depot Customer Care Team

Scott from USA

How noisy is it to shoot? Is it louder or quieter than other rifles that have silencers on them?

asked Thomas

if a projectile shot from a gun does not break the sound barrier, iot will benefit from a suppressor. If the projectile breaks the sound barrier, it will emit a small sonic boom, heard as a "crack" Since there is nothing to be done about the sonic boom, it is best to use a sub sonic projectile with a suppressor.

elliott from USA

It's the quietest springer I know of. Quieter than Gamo or Stoeger that brag about being quiet. If you wanted quieter you'd need to buy something like a Marauder. Will the neighbors know? Probably. In my hood each house in on an acre and my neighbors know when I shoot it. Lew: Actually it's the other way around. The airguns below super sonic like this one are the only ones that benefit from a suppressor. Break the sound barrier and you can't tell if it has a suppressor or not.

Todd

This Benjamin Trail is a quieter Air Rifle but the Stoeger X-20s is a little quieter.

Michael from USA

The gun is quieter than any coil spring gun for two reasons; one is it has a nitro spring, the other is it has a suppressor. They say the nitro alone is good for a 70% noise reduction and I believe it, I've compared them. The suppressor doesn't make as much difference, maybe half, but together it's quite a bit. It's quieter than Gamo guns, or the Stoeger X20S if that's what you were asking, but it can't compare to something really quiet like a suppressed PCP like the Marauder

ROBERT from USA

It is somewhat quieter than a spring-piston airgun of a similar power, because you don't have the vibration of a spring. I don't believe that the bull barrel on this gun is a silencer, nor does it need one. If you use a light pellet that goes supersonic, then the crack of the pellet is actually noisier than the discharge of the gun. I use this airgun all the time without ear protection, which is not needed.

Leroy from USA

At less than 1000 fps exit velocity, the pellet doesn't break the sound barrier so it doesn't need a silencer. As for loudness, it's a perception thing. I find the loudness to be acceptable. Ground squirrels and rabbits (at the ranch) don't react to the sound even at 20 feet. I've shot over 500 pellets in the backyard in the past month since getting the Trail NP and my neighbors haven't said a thing. Be sure to use a solid backstop (I stack up firewood to make sure nothing gets through the barrier).

Lew from USA

Is the scope illuminated?

asked john from USA

The scope that came with my rifle is NOT illuminated. It's a CenterPoint 3-9x40 AO scope. I've had good luck with CenterPoint scopes on my rimfire rifles in the past, but only time will tell if this one will hold up to a springer.

John from USA

No, the scope is not illuminated. In step, counts with a optical glass the allow you to see add night or dark places. This optical lent amplified light of any source.

Carlos A

Scope is not illuminated. It's a utility scope. The elevation and windage turrets are uncapped -- a useful feature to have in the field. The turret scales can be set to zero by loosening two screws -- a standard setup. It would be difficult to bump a turret and have it rotate. If it does, you have a setting reference on the scale. Reticle is mildot. The scope mounts firmly and securely on the weaver rail -- a very solid mounting. Be sure to use blue Loctite to keep the hex screws from loosening.

Lew from USA

WHAT IS THE RANGE ON THIS RIFLE ?

asked johnathan from USA

Everyones definition of range is different, but you can get a free program called "chairgun" which will tell you exactly what the gun/pellet combo will do. Alex: Don't lead people on, the gun is not that powerful. It wouldn't only scrape the rust from a 2mm steel plate, and only pass thru 1"ply if it were rotted.

Todd

Too many variables and what you consider range, so probably the best way to answer that would be to get the program here: http://www.hawkeoptics.com/chairgun.html and plug in 18.13gr pellet at 690fps with a BC of .032 and you will get about the max possible for this gun.

ROBERT from USA

75-100ft is the distance I've been targeting at, honestly I haven't chance to thoroughly test at that distance. Any farther distance will need a lot of target zeroing. Fine print on the box say's "Best accuracy achieved at 33 ft or under". B T N P is easy to cock, safety is non-auto, trigger pull is a bit heavy & long, only 800 fps with lead pellets. Need alloy pellets to get the 950 fps stated. Overall I'd say its a good buy for the price, but this was my first purchase in many many years.

gary from USA

It penetrates 1" plywood from 30 yards away! Or 2mm still plate.

Alex from USA

I've taken game to about 50yrds. Pellet passed completely through head.

Charles from USA

What makes a refurbished rifle "refurbished"? Does the rifle come with damaged or scratched parts? I am looking to purchase this rifle, but want to know what I should expect. Does the rifle come with accessories?

asked mario antonio from USA

I too can vouch that they are like new. I always opt for referb if available, and they're always in perfect condition. Returns are often not the guns fault like; a damaged box, loud dieseling/detonation on the first shots. Or common problems like; parallax, barrel droop, trigger. Or the user; not holding it correctly, or expecting the scope to be sighted in when it arrives. Some expect it to be like a new US made firearm, both perfect looking and function right away. If they are damaged then the offending parts have been replaced. So they should be identical to new like mine and others claim. Differences are: They often come in a plain brown box. They may have a basic 4x scope on them vs a 3-9 or whatever they normally come with. There is an "R" stamped on the breech to designate referb.

ROBERT from USA

I can only speak from my refurbished experience. Mine came in the original box and was packed well and above my expectations. There were no scratches or dents and dings. It was like brand new. I would recommend purchasing refurbished, because they do guarantee the work and I know the gun has been tested and gone through. But each person is different. Some want the brand new, others, like me, don't mind and its no gamble either because this company is reputable.

Romy from USA

Generally "refurbished" means that it has been repaired in some manner. Usually it is something internal that has gone bad during a warranty period and the company just replace the product for the original purchaser. Then repaired the unit and resold it. The unit is "refurbished" to new condition but cannot be sold as new (because it is not) The only indication my rifle was not new was the refurbished sticker on the stock. I am very happy with my purchase. The rifle comes with the scope and mounting hardware. There are no additional accessories with this rifle. I would suggest purchasing a shoulder strap and or a storage case.

Dale from USA

I can't speak for all refurbished rifles but I can tell you my AW Trail NP .22 arrived looking brand new with the exception of the "reman" stickers. As I understand it, the rifle is refurbished by the manufacturer to meet their required specs for new rifles. I've heard there can be minor cosmetic issues (e.g. scratches on stock) but I couldn't find any on mine. This rifle did not come with a sling. It came with sling mounts, a pretty decent 3x9x40 scope + mounts, and the user manual. The warranty is 30 days.

Aaron from USA

Mine looks like new and has all the accessories a new one would come with. I'm assuming there was something mechanically wrong with it the first time out but whatever it was it was fixed well. I've had it a few weeks and because of the shorter warranty I've put several hundred down the pipe to make sure all is well. Much heavier duty than I expected, not a toy for sure.

AARON from USA

the refurb I received was good as new with everything included like new and fifty bucks cheaper

David from USA

Many times, a refurbished item is simply a return. These are then reviewed and restored to like new condition and repackaged. My box was clearly marked "refurbished" but the gun itself looked brand new. One shortcoming is that it doesn't include the sling that a new one would have. The front attachment point for the sling takes a strap, not a swivel, so a standard sling will need to be adapted to fit. No big deal to me. My gun functions perfectly and the scope is also very good. The standard trigger was very long and a little rough so I have replaced it with a GRT III trigger. That makes a nice upgrade for little cost ($33) and since I paid less by getting a refurb, I didn't mind the extra expense. So far, shooting Crossman Premier HP's the gun is grouping well but I expect better as it gets broken in. I don't hesitate to buy a refurbished item if it has the specs I want.

Edward from USA

Can it take down a raccoon?

asked levi

The rifle is capable under ideal circumstances of shot placement and proper ammo selection. Coons can be heavy and tough - a humane kill is unlikely in my opinion though - a quick kill on a 40 pound coon is asking too much. I wouldn't try it myself - I have the rifle too. Squirrels and rabbits, no problem.

Dean

A good kill shot on a raccoon ...head or chest area it should take down a racoon no problem I own this rifle and it has the power up to around 50 yards for a kill....

Based on the power of the Benjamin Trail NP .22 cal., I would say yes if hit in the raccoon right place (i.e. the head or through the heart area). Otherwise you would just wind up with a wounded animal, so aim straight.

With a well-placed and accurate shot, it most certainly could. I would also make sure you're utilizing the correct ammo for the job you intend on doing (i.e., perhaps a heavier and balanced hollow point pellet). Good luck!

Can I put a bipod on the Benjamin Trail NP .22 Caliber Nitro Piston air rifle?

asked levi

Like Adam said, a clip-on will work and is the only one I ever use (Ramline). Bi-pods can affect accuracy of a springer/nitro gun, sometimes drastically, and this Ramline has the least effect on that. They're also super cheap at about $12, don't leave permanent marks on your gun, and swap instantly between most any rifles. I also put stick-on felt on the clamp so there is no risk of scratching the barrel.

ROBERT from USA

Yes, I have one mounted on my rifle with a magpul 3in Picatinny rail. Just make sure the bi pod legs have about an inch gap when folded so the barrel can pass in between when its folded up.

Bake

Yes, I put a clamp on barrel style retractable bipod on. I've also seen kits to mount on the stock, a universal bipod will work with almost any rifle.

Hi there. Is this gun the .22 Trail NP or the Trail NP XL?

asked Dug

To comment on what the other Todd said; That's without the scope! So over 9lbs as the pix shows!

Todd

Hey, it's a Benjamin Trail NP .22 Caliber. I really like mine, the only flaw or negative thing that I can say about it, is its heavy (8lbs) other than that, it's freakin awesome!!!

Todd from USA

This is the .22 Trail NP. I believe the XL is longer and produces more FPS

Sidney from USA

Hello! This is actually the Benjamin Trail NP... it is NOT the NP XL model. Hope this helps!

SCOTT.

What is the most common failure? How much will it cost to repair in the future if I buy a refurbished Trail NP .22?

asked Ted

Agreed, nitro. They leak. Probably where all these referbs came from, DOA.

Todd

the key is maintenance, anything can possibly fail, but keeping it cleaned and lubed will help it last for years.

Timothy from USA

I have been in the air rifle game for quite awhile and have not had any costly failures. I have mostly spring and nitro piston air rifles. They all seem to be holding up very well. I think the most costly mistake you can make is "dry firing" these type of rifles. Putting a spring powered rifle in the closet while its still cocked will also cost you. I have spent more money on scopes than I have on any of these rifles. Get the right scope and you should have years of fun.

gabe

Probably the nitro which is $26, plus install which isn't too hard to do. Other things which apply to virtually all these guns is the main seal is most likely damaged right out of the box and are $1.15. The scopes can sometimes break from the shock they receive when shot. Everything else should last for life. The normal warranty is 12 months, a referb is 30 days, something to consider if you don't do the work yourself.
