RWS 54 .22 Details:

A totally recoil-less, spring piston airgun seemed little more than a dream before the recent appearance of the Model 54. In order to realize this goal the engineers spent years experimenting with different systems until they created this mechanical marvel. Simple but durable, the 54 uses a floating action riding on rails to achieve a totally recoiless system that stands up to the pounding of our 1100 fps system. Not only does this arrangement prevent transmission of felt recoil to the shooter, it also permits the rifle to excel in the accuracy department. When the rifle is fired, the action moves back lightly within the stock, absorbing the recoil, and permitting the pellet to exit the barrel before any of the spring vibration affects its travel. This system dramatically improves the accuracy potential of this magnum air rifle, making it a first class choice for either long range pest control or the precise demands of field target shooting. This side lever cocking magnum rifle's other features include adjustable T06 trigger, adjustable rear sight, scope rail, Monte Carlo stock with cheek piece and checkering, and an automatic safety. Lifetime warranty.

Excellent Rifle right out of the box
January 10, 2012
Sight in with open sights was simple. Set up for the scope was a breeze. Within a very short time I was shooting dime size groups at 20 yards. Very, very pleased with my purchase of this set up.

3 5 shot groups at 50 yds averaging .321 with Kodiak pellets
February 28, 2016
More this is shot the more accurate it gets . Next stop 100 yard as 50 yards has yielded .321 5 shot groups (3) with a Kodiak pellet. Worth every penny. 4-16 scope used.
Just a great rifle
Heavy rifle but that should not stop any one as this is an outstanding rifle. Accurate to the point of almost shooting with match grade rifles or some times exceeding that accuracy plateau of accuracy.

Very accurate gun
July 8, 2015
This is a fun gun to shoot. It is very accurate and makes very tight groups, frequently hitting the same hole on a 30 yrd target. This gun is a scope killer for sure. I bought an upgraded scope by Hawke and after 200 rounds, the reticle came loose. Matt in customer service was great to work with. The replacement scope lasted for 5 rounds (yes, five shots) and the reticle broke. I now have a high end scope from Hawke (a side focus 4-16x50) and it is working well so far. Time will tell. The gun and scope are both lifetime warranteed.
Very accurate, no recoil (unless you're the scope). The customer service dept (Matt) is very helpful. I highly recommend the gun and Airgun Depot.
Inconvenient to replace scopes. I'm on scope #3.

Bought mine in 2001!

I bought this 14 years ago. It's amazing. Recoilless. Accurate. Did I mention recoilless? Once zerod in, this thing will put a pellet in anything you aim it at, right where you aimed. I have never had an issue with its performance. 14 YEARS!!!

Great rifle with manufacturer refusal to fix a simple problem
March 23, 2015
This airgun is recognized a accurate shooter with high quality components, and I agree. The rifle is coming into its own the more I shoot it and accuracy is improving. Unfortunately, I had a few issues. The Hawke scope bit the dust after only about 50 shots. The reticle turned and I sent it back. AirgunDepot made it right, since this particular scope was out of stock they allowed me to choose another up to an increased value of $189.00. The customer service was great and the agent was knowledgable about the products he spoke. I'm not going to bash Hawke either, even though it's the last thing you want, it happens, and the folks at Hawke make good scopes and stand behind their products. I have all the confidence in the world that the replacement would have given me years of dependable service, and if not Hawke would make it right too. The biggest issue is with the rail on the RWS and their inability and unwillingness to change the rail or their mount. The stop pin diameter is much smaller than the stop pin depressions in the rail. The pins are steel and the rail is aluminum. No brainer here! In time those pins are going to destroy the rail and it is not easily replaced. Although it appears the rail is just screwed on, those screws are actually rivets. Be sure to research this problem before ordering and plan on having someone do some drilling and machining on your scope mount to ensure a tight fit of stop pins in the recoil depressions. Yes there are some folks who have not had an issue, but if your like me and if it can happen it will, be aware of this issue. I am using 5mm slotted spring pins through the mount and into the rail. The rail stop pins depressions are 5mm in diameter so all movement is stopped, hence "stop pins." All the big retailers, shooters and many everyday "Joe's" like myself have made RWS aware of the issue and yet they do nothing. It's a heavy gun. It's a heavy gun. One more thing, it's a heavy gun. Don't expect your kids to be able to shoot this pig unless it's off a bench. It appears to be forgiving while using on a bipod or bench with the recoil system and weight certainly helps in the arena of stabilization if your a bigger fella with some strength who can handle himself. Shooting off hand for any amount of time will tire you. I'll work through these issues and am certain this rifle will perform well for me.
Better wood than I thought, crisp adjustable trigger. I haven't done any adjustments from the factory setting so can't comment on it's fine tuning, but out of the box it has creep to a wall that is set good for hunting applications. I hear RWS does well with warranty issues, so that is plus on there end. I don't mind spending more money on a product if the manufacturer stands behind it and they have good customer service.
The front site sits on a plastic housing. Why they put a piece of plastic on such a great looking gun is as much of mystery to me as why they won't fix the rail issue!

RWS Air King 54
March 22, 2015
I purchased this gun about 3 weeks ago to replace an inferior high speed 177 cal rifle. The craftsmanship is over the top every point screams quality that's hard to find today. But the most important feature is its accuracy, this gun will put pellets thru the same holes time and time again. The Hawke scope upgrade and lock down Mount are worth every penny.
Accuracy / trigger / scope upgrade. / just plain a beautiful piece of craftsmanship.
I haven't found one!

Purchased the 54 with the Hawke scope & mount combo a couple of months ago. Ruined the scope after 50 shots or so (Hawke quickly replaced it). I have now put several hundred shots through it with no issues. It just gets better!! I have access to a good rifle range and shoot from a bench rest. At 25 yards, I'm obliterating a quarter sized dot within 10 shots!! Amazing accuracy from a 'Springer'!!! Have tried several brands of pellets. The rifle loves Beeman, FTS, domed, copper plated pellets!! Also, the Beeman and RWS hollow points. Took a squirrel off the back deck last evening, at 37 yards. He was SCD, (stone cold dead), and didn't move a step!!
Quality of workmanship, (the plastic trigger is fine), adjustable trigger is light and crisp. Accuracy is astounding!! The Hawke scope is terrific with Mil-Dots and lighted reticle!! (Never mind the first scope's problem). Overall, a great purchase!!
Weight and bulkiness!! (I call it "The Beast"). I carried a M1 Garand in the military and this combo weighs more!!! Not for a "walk around" rifle. Needs to be shot from a rest. Cocking effort is much and it has a long stroke. One needs quite a bit of leverage and strength to accomplish it.

RWS 54 Combo in .22 Caliber - Amazing
June 13, 2012
The recoilless operation is amazing! It lets you see the pellet landing on target (as well as when you pull a shot). Works well with lots of different pellets, but so far likes RWS Superdomes (14.2 gr at 810 fps) and Benjamin Discovery Hollowpoints (14.3 gr at 795 fps). Best 5-shot group at 25 yards was with Benjamin pellets and measured .25" CTC with Superdomes close behind at .35" CTC. The Hawke Scope with lockdown mount are rock-solid.
- recoilless operation - power (800+ FPS as measured with Chrony using .22 pellets in 14 gr. range) - accuracy
- weight, but that is a tradeoff for recoilless operation. Save money on gym memberships with this rifle.

rws model 54

This rifle rocks. It is a bit heavy but most of the better made rifles are heavy. Excellent German quality. Very Powerful. When I first shot it, I couldn't believe it. No recoil. Unreal!!! All of the demonstrations for this rifle are true. I bought the 22 cal and it hits hard. This is one rifle that you want to shoot all the time. It is on the pricey side but worth every penny. You can buy one great rifle or settle for several average ones. RWS makes several great rifles but this air king model 54 tops them all.

RWS 54 is stellar
June 10, 2010
My friend got me on an air gun kick recently. I started doing research and settled on an RWS gun. I really wanted the 54 because, well lets face it, it's awesome. But my budget was more in the 48/52 range. I went to the local gun shop where I buy my "real" guns and what do I find? An RWS 54 (.22cal) with a Tasco 3-9x34 on consignment! We contacted the owner and it was an older gentleman who had only put about 200 pellets through it. I walked away with it for $450. Needless to say I'm very happy! It's a tackdriver, and I'm looking forward to upgrading the scope base and scope next. I am nothing but pleased with the RWS quality. Note: at 9 pounds its heavy, feels like 20.

RWS 54 .22 Combo
March 8, 2008
Absolutely superb rifle in every way. Beautifully made, and deadly accurate. I bought the combo deal which includes an excellent RWS300 scope and 'c' mount which on there own are worth $200 - hence the combo price is a great deal. I zeroed the rifle for 50 yards with RWS Super domed - easy 1/4" grouping if not tighter at that range - and for squirrels I use Crow Magnum pellets. This gun is amazing - NO recoil and not overly loud considering it's a magnum rifle. 5x squirrels with 5 shots - they didn't know what hit them ! Thank you RWS and Thank you Airgun Depot.

RWS Airguns- Model 54 .22 cal
February 29, 2008
Quite simply the best .22 Magnum you'll ever have the pleasure to own and shoot. Totally accurate, NO recoil at all, and not too loud. Beautifully made, and finished. This is a very powerful rifle - not for the weak or faint of heart, as it will give your arms a work out cocking it - but it's well worth it. The combo kit is an added bonus as the RSW300 included scope and 'C' Rail mount would cost at least another $200 if you bought them separately. 1/4" groups at 30 yards with a sight rest - I'm astounded by the power and accuracy of the gun. The RWS superdome pellets simply destroyed my $30 Beeman Pellet trap after 50 hits.....squirrels, pigeons and vermin beware ...there's a new sheriff in town. You get what you pay for - and this beauty is worth every penny. If you are considering a Magnum air rifle look no further this does it all.

RWS 54, 22 caliber
September 15, 2007
This gun is an impressive piece of engineering. Even though it has a powerful spring, there's no "jump" recoil, which is great for accuracy when shooting from different positions. It's really something to just squeeze the trigger, feel nothing, and yet the pellet hits the bullseye with great force. And I just want to say here that I appreciate the great service and honesty of Airgundepot.

August 13, 2007
It's the finest pellet gun I have ever owned. It's accurate and powerful and I love to shoot it. I only wish this site had 22. cal round ball pellets, but until they do these rws superdomes will work nicely

RWS Modle 54 .22cal
March 25, 2007
This gun is great!! It is the best spring piston rifle I have ever shot. The accuracy is great shooting a pretty flat trajectory up to 50 yards with crossman premiers. The only down side is the rifle is huge and is pretty heavy so could be a problem if hunting for extended periods of time. A bit pricy but worth it you get what you pay for.

I had one willed to me and it was broken who do I contact to get it fixed, I hear they have a life time warranty.

By Staff on November 11, 2011

You would need to contact www.umarexusa.com .

However, warranty depends on what is wrong with the gun. If it was damaged or misused then they wont warranty it. If it was mechanical failure they will. Either way they should be able to fix it for you.

how would you compare mod 54 to 460 mag ?
By Conor from Sunnyside, WA on February 1, 2012

I believe they have the same powerplant, just one is a side lever.
By Conor from Sunnyside, WA on February 1, 2012

I'm sorry, this is the same powerplant as a RWS 48, not a 460.

By Chris Gibson from Ridgefield, CT on February 17, 2012
Can you cock the lever when prone? The reason why I want one of these over break barrels is because I want to be able to stay prone. If so how difficult is it to cock the level sideways vs vertical? Thanks.

By Donnie from North Carolina on February 20, 2012
Can this gun be used by a left handed shooter, need to know to make a decision.
