Most under-lever airguns are springers, and I mean real spring piston powered air rifles. There are a couple gas piston-powered under levers and even some pre-charged pneumatics. With the advanced technology available now, why is there still a market for these types of air rifles?
Have you had conversations with airgunners, especially those who’ve been around the airgun community a while? You may have gotten the impression that they pride themselves for shooting or even just owning a true springer like the Weihrauch HW97K.
One Shot At A Time
The underlever springers are generally single shot, some airgunners claim a single shot is more accurate than a repeater. In fact, some will only utilize the single-shot tray for that very reason even when a multi-shot magazine is available. Is this proven?
Some say there is a safer keeping of the pellet when the pellet is directly inserted into the breach as opposed to several rotating around in the mag awaiting its insertion. Damaged pellets can affect the accuracy as it can change the flight pattern.
Thought Process
Some of the ability to be more accurate with a single shot may also lie on the shooters’ thought process. Loading a single pellet before commencing fire takes more time and effort, that may translate into better shooting habits and better accuracy.
With a multi-shot airgun like the Gamo Swarm Viper, the shooters’ thought process might be one of “Oh well, I’ll get it on the next shot!” Each shot requires less effort than that of a single shot air rifle.
With those things in mind, there may be some evidence as to why some believe a single shot airgun is more accurate than the other. But that isn’t the only theory out there, what about the barrel position or functions?
Barrel Stability
One of the appeals of an under lever air rifle like the Diana RWS 460 Magnum is the stability of the barrel. A one piece barrel eliminates the possible barrel droop some break barrels may eventually experience. We have to admit, the more moving parts, the more possibility of failure at the joints. Without joints, failure in that sense isn’t possible.
These types of airguns are not for everyone, hence why there aren’t hundreds of them available. They are for some, though— and to those of you who enjoy the slow-down of airgunning to hear that pellet smack the target without the rush of the reload, cheers!
