not so great
The gun cocks like it's eating itself, however I was expecting that because of the research I had done online before the purchase. Well, I was thinking let's start shooting this thing and see if it smoothes out like others suggested. After nearly 1K rounds going through it, it got even worse! At that point I decided to take the action out of the stock and see what's going on. Once opened, I noticed the bottome of cocking link is not rested on a rolling pin in the holding bracket like the HW30. It rests directly on the holding bracket. The 1K rounds going through it has already created a visible rubbing streak along the bottom of the cocking link (the second, longer piece of the two-piece link system). The bottom is now showing silver metal color. After seeing this, I decided to apply some moly to the bottome (and top) of the link and put the gun back together. It didn't help at all. The cocking process is still very gritty and rough, a far cry from the smoothness of both the R9 and HW30s. Then I started noticing the barrel lockup seemed off too. It's not the crisp click anymore but more like a mushy, undefined joint when closing. At the same time, the gun started doing vertical strings at 30 yards. Also there are now scraping marks on the breech block , on both sides! I was about had enough with it at that point and created a RMA with Airgundepot. I will try my luck again with a replacement. Personally I like its size and power but the rough/gritty cocking make this gun feel like it's a $30 Chinese beater instead of a close to $400 German steel. Oh, forgot the mention on this particular gun, the auto safty doesn't always work. All in all, a bad experience with a HW.

If you want accuracy, buy this rifle!
I really like this rifle. Required little to no break in. Accurate right out of the box. Chronied with 7.0 RWS hobbies after 30 shots. Ten shot string ranged between 862 and 866. That is a standard deviation of only 1.5! No twang for first fifty shots. Then very twangy, but velocity and accuracy not affected. Will have to wait and see if twang goes away. Despite the excellent open sites, I did mount a scope in order to take advantage of the rifle's accuracy. Cloverleafs from 20 yards is easy. Trigger was fine out of the box. I saw no need for adjustment. I did need to tighten the stock screws several times. Cocking effort not bad at about 30 pounds. If you were only going to own one air rifle, this would be it. Good all around performance for target, plinking, and small pest management.
ProsBeautifully finished. Light weight. Great trigger. Extreme accuracy. Not pellet fussy. Not hold sensitive. Excellent iron sights.
ConsGot very twangy after about 50 shots. From what I have read, this is a characteristic of this rifle. As long as velocity and accuracy are not affected, it is not a big concern to me, but at this price, the rifle should not need a tune in order to be a perfect shooter.

Under Rated Value
Ordered an HW50S .177 on the premise that "I needed an HW30 but twice the power". In other words I wanted an accurate yet light weight carbine for short to medium range airgunning. The HW50S is just that- a perfect middle weight "do-all" nestled right in between the HW30 and 95. Mine arrived well boxed with beautiful bluing and a decent grained hardwood featuring checkering on the fore end and a half checkered half stippled hand grip. Contrary to airgunner lore- the 50S is not a high effort cocking air gun. It is high effort for the power level. Figure 25-30# effort to cock the 10-11.5 fpe sweet shooter. It's very accurate at this power level. The Rekord trigger is legendary and breaks crisp and clean. The shot cycle is quite nice with a very slight thumpy buzz . Much better than many other airguns. I've run several hundred pellets through it already and it keeps getting better. JSB Exact 8.44gr run fastest followed by brown box Crosman Premiere Light 7.9gr but the CPL's are slightly more accurate in this example. If you've been sitting on the fence eyeballing this gem, there is no better time than now(or when Airgun Depot has one of their killer specials with XX% off + Free Shipping) to pick one up. You won't be disappointed! I am not and I already have an HW30, 97 & 98.
ProsMiddle weight carbine Very accurate Minelli stock is quite nice and fits well. Open Sights- 4 notch selection in rear with changeable inserts in front. Rekord trigger
ConsFor the power level : the cocking effort may be higher than desired - it's slightly easier than an untuned HW95/R9 or Diana 34- so it really isn't all that bad. Some may have issue with trigger reach, although most Weihrauchs have this trait.
