The RWS 54 Air King is a recoilless sidelever rifle based on the action of the RWS 48/52 series. By floating the action on rails, RWS takes the rifle's powerful recoil and significantly reduces the amount you feel. It also enhances accuracy, because the pellet exits the barrel before spring vibration is transmitted to it.

Both calibers come with the TO6 2-stage adjustable trigger and have an excellent reputation.

First, I'd like to say that very often refurbished is the way to go! You get a product that many times is a product return because of buyer's remorse, or which the buyer hasn't the physical strength to manipulate the cocking mechanism. Very often, there isn't a single flaw in the product, but even so, you know that the product has been gone over by a professional technician and which is certified to function as good as any new gun that is sold. The price of a refurb is always less than a new product, so you get an immediate discount! If you are lucky to be able to combine low price with another sales incentive, as AGD often has, you will be even better off! Don't forget that AGD also offers a 30 day return policy, no questions asked, and how can you go wrong? For me, I was able to save plenty, and my refurb was "like new"! The RWS 54 Diana scope combo is a wonderful rifle, and of which I can find nothing that doesn't live up to all the other positives that others have already mentioned. You can use the combo scope, but I'm rather certain that you will want to upgrade your scope to a better quality scope that can be relied on to perform at all times, and not let you down when you least expect it. You can probably expect for scope failure for almost any scope that you will mount...except...for the Vortex Diamondback 3-12 X40 AO. It is very true that, although this gun is easy on the shooter, and is marketed as recoilless, it does have a very shocking (to the scope) recoil along a track inside the stock. This design will not allow most scopes to last very long before shaking themselves into trash. Remember that every scope will work for at least one shot! Get yourselfthe scope that I recommended, and mate it to this fine rifle, and you will have yourself a fine system that you will have difficulty parting with!

Pros
Tack driving accuracy, in all calibers, with the right pellet, at ranges up to and often beyond 50 yards; solid, beautiful and mechanically perfect; fine German engineering sought after by many and equaled by few; a gun to be proud of!

Cons
Severely limited scope choices due to high shock factor inherent to this model, even more so than to springers in general. Cheap scopes may function for a time, but most probably won't last long!

When I was switching over from powder burners to air rifles about 15 years ago, I spotted this rifle as the best (at the time) Remember PCP's were just coming on the scene back then. But,the price made it out of the question. Now, I'm all grown up and after gathering a collection of 15 air rifles ( all types from co2, break barrels, & PCP) There it is on the back pages of the web site....a RWS 54 Air King, the one that got away...Not anymore, I bought it. It arrived well packaged in mint condition with a RWS 4 power scope. It shoots all weights of pellets. In fact it loves the heavy 26 - 29 grain pellets that look like bullets. The ones that say for PCP use only... It will put one of those through 6 empty tin cans at 33 feet. That is 12 sides of can. This is one powerful 22.

Pros
Powerful, smooth to shoot, The gun slides on the stock making it hardly recoil . It is quiet. The side lever is easy to cock and very safe to load.

Cons
The instruction do not mention how to properly cock this weapon, which is why it was probably returned. It has built in safety that must be engaged before it will cock correctly. Here is how I do it : 1. make sure the action is at the front of the stock. Either push it there with your thumb or simply point the barrel towards the ground an gravity will put it there for you. Without having the action forward it will not cock correctly and you will become frustrated.... 2. Holding the rifle with your left hand and the butt on your hip or thigh, place your right hand between the lever and the rifle, with your palm touching the lever. Your hand should be upside down. Then start the cocking movement. As you pass through the arc your hand will be right side up and securely on the lever handle. Very safe....Then load your pellet... With your left hand press the safety button on the left side of the port and with your right hand reverse the lever direction to close. NOTE...there should be no pressure on the close move. If there is it means you did not cock the rifle completely and this could lead to injury. This is a big boy/girl gun. it ways close to 12 pounds, but it is well worth it

You will never be sorry for buying this.

Pros
Solid with practically zero recoil. VERY ACCURATE!!!!

Cons
Heavy but worth it. I would not carry it around but sitting or plinking the weight is perfect.

Massive looking. My first side cock. I had a Beeman R1 with all the frills-supertune, trigger tune, etc. A young man sold me his. Once I loaded it and pulled the trigger, I knew it had much more power than the supertuned R1. I never checked the accuracy of either air gun due to loss of the air rifles, what a shame. This air rifle may have been well broken in, the R1 not. I mean the 54 had gobs more power. I had to have another.

Pros
High power!

Cons
Weight was a speck more than I wished.
