Definitive Guide to Hatsan Velox

The Hatsan Velox is a semi-auto pellet pcp; there is no need to re-cock between shots, keep your aimpoint, and pull the trigger for back-to-back shots. It is available in .22 and .25 calibers and two color options, black or FDE. With this pistol, you'll be able to knock down targets as fast as you can pull the trigger. Shooting time doesn't have to wait; when the first air cylinder is depleted, just unscrew it and install the second one! Another great feature is the 1/2 UNF threaded muzzle that gives the ability to create a safe and quiet shooting experience indoors or out.

Detailed Review

Hatsan is known for its line of high-powered PCPs among other types of airguns. The Velox, in pistol language, could be considered a high-powered small bore pcp pistol, and looks the part when it shows up in the Hatsan hard case.

The Velox pellet pistol is a quality build with a German steel barrel and a steel upper receiver housed in a black synthetic textured housing for a better grip while handling and shooting. This one is semi-auto, giving no reason to remove your finger from the trigger until the magazine is empty.

Included with this pistol are the Hatsan hard case with custom molds, two detachable 55cc air cylinders, extra O rings, and two S/Roto index magazines. A twelve round capacity in .22 caliber and ten rounds in .25.

The total length of the Velox is 11.4" and the total weight is 2.15 lbs. The precision rifled and choked shrouded German steel barrel measures 5.5 inches, and the muzzle is threaded for 1/2 UNF, enabling the attachment of a moderator to dampen the report and may also increase the velocity.

The textured grip also acts as an onboard magazine storage for the second magazine, making it more accessible for quicker reloads.

Integrated into the grip and behind the trigger and trigger guard is the push button manual safety, giving the shooter easy access to disengage and engage the safety.

Another great feature is the standard Foster fill port, which is located directly in front of the trigger guard, conveniently next to the easy-to-read integrated manometer. The max fill pressure is 3,625 psi or 250 bar. When the air cylinder is depleted, while under pressure, unscrew it from the pistol and attach the charged second cylinder to continue shooting.

With the fiber optic front and rear sights and the dovetail/weaver rail, the sight options are endless. Take it to the range and enjoy it as it is peeping through the fiber optic sights or mount a red dot or pistol scope on the optics rail. The Velox gives you many options!

Setup & Operation

Operation and setup are extremely simple. Before proceeding, check the safety and make sure it's engaged. Once the safety is engaged, choose your sight and mount it if necessary. This is a pcp, so get your air source, attach the Foster fitting to the fill port, and fill the air cylinder. Repeat the same action to fill the second cylinder.

Next fill the two S/Roto index magazines. Turn the cover counterclockwise until it stops. Flip the magazine over and load one pellet skirt first into the hole. Flip the magazine back over and finish loading the rest of the pellets head first until full. Pull the cocking handle to the rear position and lock it. Pull the breach cover down and insert the magazine from the right side of the pistol. Push the cocking handle to the forward position, take aim and squeeze the trigger repeatedly until the magazine is empty.

Performance & Accuracy

Performance includes accuracy, velocity, and shot count. For this portion, we tested the Velox with three different pellets. The JSB Exact Jumbo Diabolo 15.89's, the H&N Sport Baracuda 15's, and the JTS Dead Center 18.1 Grain Pellets.

Without a regulator, the shot count tends to vary. Overall, the shooter should get two mags per fill from the .22 or just under, that's 24 shots. Given this is a semi-auto pcp, the pellets go fast when you're having fun.

The velocity ranged from an average of 570 fps to 573 fps, depending on the ammunition used. Here are the results.

JSB Exact Jumbo Diabolo 15.89 Grain Pellets results at 10 yards:

  • High: 589 FPS /12.17 FPE
  • Low: 560 FPS / 11 FPE
  • Average: 573 FPS / 11.5 FPE

H&N Sport Baracuda 15's 15.89 Pellets results at 10 yards:

  • High: 587 FPS / 12.09 FPE
  • Low: 563 FPS / 11.12 FPE
  • Average: 574 FPS / 11.66 FPE

JTS Dead Center 18.1 Grain Pellets results at 10 yards:

  • High: 584 FPS / 13.71 FPE
  • Low: 540 FPS /11.72 FPE
  • Average: 570 FPS / 13.1 FPE

Depending on whether you choose to implement the fiber optic sights or mount an optic, accuracy will vary. A scope, for many shooters, ensures a more consistent and accurate aim point, producing consistent accuracy. It's always great to have options.

Here are the results from a rest, using the fiber optic open sights at ten yards with the same pellets mentioned in the velocity segment above. The groups represent a full magazine; this is the .22 caliber, so the magazine holds 12 shots.

It's hard to choose a favorite; they all shot well, but some had more flyers than the others. For example, the JTS Dead Centers shot a great group but had a few more flyers than the JSB and H&N Sport.

The unregulated aspect is going to play a large part in the accuracy from shot one to shot 22 or 24. The velocities will vary, yielding different results when the air cylinder is full compared to when it is less than or near empty.

The JTS Dead Centers had several pellets enter near the same aimpoint but a couple flew high and right, while a few others were low. The first shots were high right, the last shots were the lower ones, all accounting for the change in velocity.

The JSB Exact Jumbo Diabolo 15.89's produced more of a string of shots starting high and gradually dropping, with one bullseye.

The H&N Sport Baracuda 15's were a little more uniform than the JSBs with only one flyer.

Summing Up

The Hatsan Velox is a PCP pellet pistol you'll want to take to the range with plenty of pellets! This semi-auto pcp is easy to operate and a ton of fun to shoot! After loading both magazines, insert the extra one into the grip for safekeeping and quick access. Insert the other magazine into the breach, take aim, and without removing your hand from the trigger, or in fact your eye from the sight picture, empty the magazine.

Some features you may not find on another pcp pistol are the threaded muzzle for moderation, giving you and your neighbors a quiet experience. The weaver/dovetail rail making the optic options almost endless.

The quick disconnect foster fill port makes filling the Hatsan Velox pellet pistol quick and easy, but it also includes an additional air cylinder so the fun doesn't stop there! Once you've emptied two magazines, unscrew the existing air cylinder and screw the additional cylinder onto the pistol, once you've loaded the magazines again, rinse, lather, repeat.

The fiber optic sights are easily manageable with clear aimpoints, but the Hatsan Optima 1X30 Red Dot Sight would be a great fit and help tighten those groups nicely.

The included hard case and all the accessories say serious airgunner, but this PCP says fun all over it! If you're looking for something small and compact but capable of some backyard pesting consider the Semi-Auto Hatsan Velox PCP pistol in .22 or .25 caliber.
