Awesome rifle! The scope was a great surprise! The rifle is a big boy air rifle. Shoots hard! Putting Bremen silver tips thru 3/4 plywood at 75 yards! Need I say more! As being a refurbished gun, wouldn't no it endless you were the one returning it! Well worth it!

This gun is a beast. It is heavier and longer than my 30-30 and the scope is at least as good if not better. Using a regular head pellet, it blows out a 1/2 inch thick OSB board at 40 paces and I put 4 straight shots into a 4 inch circle right out of the box. I bought it for varmint control, but now since it has way more power than I expected I will have to be more selective on where I shoot from because of nearby homes and traffic. This is a serious piece of weaponry. It is NOT a toy. I bought it expecting it would have more knockdown power than the .22 cal I first looked at and I got it. Wow! It's a little louder than I hoped it would be, but the power and accuracy far outweigh that aspect.

Hello, I am confused. what weight pellet has the most fps in .22 and .25 I have read that a heveay pellet goes slower, and hits softer. Is there a pellet that works best in the walthers for hunting varmits and pest control? Thanks for any info Patty

asked Patty

One should not confuse fps and fpe when it comes to energy. Remember fps is measured as the pellet or bullet leaves the barrell, and this does effect many things but isn't as when it comes down to knockdown power - that's why the latter answer is more correct. A slower moving projectile with greater mass can have tremendous knockdown power. Think for a minute of a .45 1911 auto, not much in the way of fps but unbelievable knockdown power, which I'dis why the U.S. Army returned to it and have up on the 9 mm auto. You may also consider the artisan like quality of many English hunting air rifles, which limit by law their energy yet have plenty enough power to do the job properly. meant experts on the subject have commented for years that too many focus on fps when they really should pay attention to fpe.

The gun only makes x amount of power so if a pellet is heavy it'll be slower, and lighter will be faster, kinda like you throwing rocks. There is usually one pellet weight that the gun likes best in power or accuracy. You can find the best for accuracy by shooting targets, and power by shooting over a chronograph. Take a typical break-barrel .177cal gun for example; you will usually have peak power with the lightest pellets, then after around 8.4gr which is mid-weight, they'll drop in power fast. This varies with the model gun but is fairly consistent. So in my example gun I get 19ftlbs with an alloy pellet, then 18.8 w/ 8.4gr, then drop to 17.5 with 10.5gr. So for me the 8.4gr is a great choice because it's the heaviest with virtually max power, and it's virtually as accurate as a heavy 10.5gr so it's the best all-around pellet for me. Brands make a difference as well, some are a tighter fit, harder/softer, well or poorly made so they can have big changes in power and accuracy too. If you use quality pellets you shouldn't have to worry about that much. JSB are great pellets, as are H&N and RWS, but not every pellet they offer, you need to pick the right ones for you. In .25cal the JSB are probably your best bet right now because there are so few pellets to choose from and the JSB are excellent and work ideal in most guns. The H&N Barracuda is great but too heavy for most guns and often too heavy for most varmints. It doesn't do any good to have a heavy pellet if it passes right through the critter. If your pellets go through then you want to consider lighter (faster) pellets which cause more damage as they pass through, or hollow point pellets. A hollow point (if it opens) will do a lot of damage. It could easily be the difference between the animal running off and collapsing on the spot. The H&N Crow Magnum pellet in any caliber is outstanding for pests using the more powerful guns like the Walther. You can write me at chevota at hotmail if you want more info, I can be a greater help if I know what gun you have and what you're shooting at. Otherwise try the Crow Mag and some JSB, it's hard to go wrong there.

The lighter the pellet, the faster it goes. Typically the heaver pellets are slower but generate more Foot pounds of kinetic energy (FPE).
