Why Doesn’t a Draco BB Gun Exist?

The Draco SBR is the subject of much discussion and curiosity.  Like many purpose-built firearms, the Draco holds a specific place in the modern arsenal of interesting weapons.  But what is it, and why don’t we have a BB gun version?  Let’s get into it.

History and Purpose of the Draco Pistol

Draco
The Draco design is similar to an AK-47 pistol

It’s been difficult to find an exact date when the Draco first came on the scene, but we think it’s a more recent addition to the AK variants.  It’s essentially an AK-47 in pistol form, making it a terrifying weapon for sure.  The Draco is equipped with a 12.5” barrel, pistol grip, and a 30-round magazine.  Without a muzzle brake or suppressor, this must look like a fire-breathing dragon.  If the visual isn’t enough to cause terror, then just imagine the ferocious report of this beast.  The shorter the barrel, the louder the gun may be.  Given that the Draco fires a large caliber rifle round, it must simply thunder.

As mentioned above, the Draco chambers the same 7.62×39 round as the AK47 and many other eastern block weapon variants based on the AK design.  The AK47 was always about power and durability first, and then accuracy was considered elsewhere down the list.  The Draco is most certainly going to follow suit.  With a very short sight radius, it will be best suited as a close-range weapon.  Ideal for concealment and close quarters, the Draco could easily be slung via a single-point mount and hidden under a coat.  Just consider the potential firepower the Draco brings to the table in such a small, portable package.

Draco BB Gun Replicas

It’s interesting, given the popularity of SBR firearms and the AK platform in general, that we don’t already have a Draco airgun replica.  Maybe there’s a manufacturer out there that will pick up the mantel and make one down the road.  There is certainly no shortage of AR15 airgun variants on the market, but it would be nice to see some AK variants as well.

Don’t get us wrong; there are some AK-based airguns out there with the Crosman AK1 being one of the best.  The AK1 is built as you’d expect from something trying to duplicate the DNA of an eastern block firearm.  It’s hefty, sturdy, and a boatload of fun to shoot. Looking at the AK1, it really would not take much to condense it into something close to a Draco.

Other Interesting Replicas

There is a precedent for companies making replicas of rare and unusual firearms.  One of the most notable is the Mosin Nagant M1891 bb rifle replica.  As its name suggests, it was created around 1891 as a close-quarters battle rifle that was easy to conceal yet still delivered devastating power on target.  It uses the same round as the full-sized Nagant, which is 7.62x38mm, nearly identical to the 7.62×39 used in the Draco.

There are more examples of unique military replicas, like the Schofield and Nagant revolvers and the entire Umarex Legends line of co2 replicas. So maybe a company like Umarex or even Air Venturi may take a look at the Draco and decide it’s worth making.  I guess time will tell.

Without a doubt, the form factor of the Draco has made it a very popular firearm for personal and home defense.  A proper BB gun replica would be a very cool option for those who owned one or were looking to own one.  Replica airguns provide great value to shooters because they can become familiar with the form factor, switchology, and get in a lot more useful trigger time.  How cool would it be for the Draco to be added to the ever-growing lineup of replica airguns?
